Last year, we decided to transform our smaller Spokane yard into a low maintenance gardening system! This included tearing out grass to lay weed fabric and rock, removing some dead trees and bushes, and installing garden beds with irrigated drip lines.

We also added cattle fencing between 6 garden beds to create a fun walking tunnel system. This form of vertical gardening has many benefits like attracting pollinators and optimizing produce yield in smaller spaces. By far one of our favorite features!

We were astonished at the amount of tomatoes, cucumbers and squashes we were able to collect from the tunnel. It also gave us plenty of space to plant other things like celery, peppers, and beets in the remaining planter space.

Around the edges of the property, we made in-ground gardening areas sectioned off by paver walkways. They also had automatic sprayer lines that watered in the early hours of the morning. These low maintenance areas provided plenty of space for pumpkins, potatoes, onions and an entire row of berry bushes. In between the berries we had giant sunflowers that really helped attract bees and other pollinators to increase production.

Definitely an amazing and abundant gardening season for us! We learned a lot and are proud of what we achieved in our small space. It also ignited a passion for us to help others find the beauty and peace that comes from growing your own food! Nothing taste better than food you harvest after your hard work, it’s pure magic!
